June 19th, 2008: 6:00 PM - Healthy Focus Series
As part of Duke Raleigh Hospital’s “Healthy Focus” Series, Dr. Lestini, will be speaking about osteoporosis. The seminar is free, but please visit Duke Raleigh Hospital for more information.
Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for 44 million Americans. Ten million individuals already have osteoporosis and 34 million more have low bone mass placing them at increased risk for developing osteoporosis and fractures it causes. Eighty percent of those affected by osteoporosis are women. Known as “the silent thief,” osteoporosis progresses without symptoms or pain until bones start to break, generally in the hip, spine or wrist.
Osteoporosis is preventable if bone loss is detected early. If you already have osteoporosis, you can live actively and comfortably by seeking proper medical care and making some adjustments in your lifestyle. Your health care provider may prescribe a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, a regular program of weight-bearing exercise and medical treatment.
If you are concerned about Osteoporosis, or the risk you pose for developing osteoporosis, please make an appointment to discuss your options with our health care providers.
New Surgical Procedure
Dr. Lestini was recently trained in the new The X-STOP® Interspinous Process Decompression (IPD®) Procedure at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC.
Dr. Lestini has begun to implement this procedure to patients who qualify, namely those with spinal stenosis — a narrowing of the spinal canal. The X-STOP® IPD® Procedure can potentially offer patients several benefits compared to traditional surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis.

American Heart Association-CPR Recertification-Training Program
Our providers recently underwent a recertification-training program from the American Heart Association in CPR.
CPR for the professional rescuer teaches health care providers to respond to breathing, cardiovascular, and respiratory emergencies on an adult victim. This recertification gave our health care providers the knowledge of new guidelines and skills necessary to provide care to a victim requiring CPR or suffering a breathing emergency. Our providers also learned advanced skills in the use of supplemental oxygen, treatment of choking, and in airway management.
The American Heart Association's Life Support course is totally redesigned for health care providers who participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of hospital. Providers enhanced their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies emphasizing the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation.
World Osteoporosis Day
World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) celebrated the theme Bone Appétit - the role of food and nutrition in building and maintaining strong bones. WOD's message is that while osteoporosis is serious, individuals can take responsibility for their bone health by building strong bones through healthy lifestyle.
Triangle Spine is committed to educating our patients about the role of Osteoporosis and good spinal health. That's why we will be holding Osteoporosis clinic days at our office. More information on the details and dates of these special clinic days will be posted shortly.
