Spinal Cord Stimulation

Spinal cord stimulation is a safe and effective therapy that has been in use for over 35 years and has helped thousands of people find pain relief. The procedure is reversible-which means even though it is surgically implanted, the device can always be removed by your doctor.

When is SCS Therapy Used in Pain Management?

Pain is treated in many ways depending on the cause of the pain and how bad it is. When pain is severe and lasts a long time, many things are usually tried-physical therapy, surgery, as well as different types of drugs. Doctors usually will try SCS therapy if these other pain treatments are not working very well.

How PRECISION™ Works

Pain is an electrical signal that travels along the spinal cord to the brain. The spinal cord stimulator sends tiny electrical impulses to the nerves. Those impulses mask the pain signals going to the brain. This is called paresthesia. What it feels like can be different from one person to the next, but many people say it's like a tingling sensation.

The Precision™ SCS system uses current steering technology, which is intended to allow you and Dr. Lestini to better control your pain. If needed, Precision™ can even cover more than one pain area at the same time.

Surgically Implanted Parts

The Precision™ SCS System has implanted parts and external parts. The implanted parts are the Implantable Pulse Generator (IPG) and the leads. The small Precision IPG holds advanced electronics and a rechargeable battery and generates the pain-masking electrical signals.

The IPG is surgically implanted under the skin, usually in the hip area. Because of the Precision IPG's small size, Dr. Lestini may implant it in a more comfortable or convenient place. You should talk to your doctor about what area might be best for you.

Attached to the Precision™ IPG are leads that are placed under the skin next to the spinal cord. The end of each lead has contacts that deliver pain-masking electrical signals to the spinal cord.

What to Expect with Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS)

Thousands of SCS patients consider SCS therapy a welcome relief from pain. Spinal cord stimulation cannot cure pain or eliminate the cause. It does, however, provide control of and relief from certain types of pain over the area where the paresthesia is felt.

Spinal Cord Stimulation has been in clinical use for decades. Thousands of people worldwide have benefited from spinal cord stimulation therapy. The PRECISION™ SCS system has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for adults with chronic pain of the trunk and or limbs, including unilateral or bilateral pain associated with failed back syndrome and intractable low back and leg pain.
