As a result of a car accident, I experienced back problems for five years. Though the pain was tolerable, it was continuous and a hindrance when performing daily tasks. I consulted with Dr. Lestini about my condition and also explained that I was having knee problems that stemmed from the car accident. He encouraged me to first take care of my knee problems and then have my back problems reevaluated.
I resisted the thought of back surgery for several years prior. Over a four-year period, I had three separate series of epidural steroid treatments for pain. This helped, but only for two or three months following the treatments.
After MRIs, X-Rays, Cat Scans, electro nerve and discogram tests, I finally agreed to have back surgery and the date was set. I approached the surgery with great faith in Dr. Lestini's advice and experience. The surgery lasted approximately five hours.
The hospital staff was very attentive to my needs, and the day after the surgery, I was up and walking with the assistance of physical therapists. After a four-day stay in the hospital, I returned home and recovered three weeks before going to physical therapy. I also continued exercising at home by walking two or three miles a day and working out in my yard (see photo of patient above). I've also been using a bone growth stimulator for 30 minutes a day. At the age of 74, I am surprised how much all of this has helped accelerate my recovery.
I returned to Dr. Lestini recently for a post-operative evaluation. He said that I had exceeded his expectations in recovery.
I am glad I decided to have the operation. If I had known how much it would improve my life, I would have done it earlier. Now I am able to spend six hours a day working in my yard without pain.
Dr. Lestini is an honest and trustworthy man. He was upfront and told me what I could expect from the surgery. I highly recommend him to anyone who is considering having back surgery.
