I thought it was fitting to send this letter of appreciation because I’m able to look forward to a new year with optimism and joy. A year filled with good health and endless possibilities of things to do and places to go. It’s because of Dr. Lestini that I’m able to enjoy a full life including walking, standing, dancing, aerobics, golfing ... you name it. I can again live life without calculating how long I will be standing, or how far I need to walk.
When I had my triple spinal fusion surgery in March 2009, I had been in constant and excruciating pain. Cortisone shots hardly made a dent in the pain. I couldn’t grocery shop because of the pain just standing at the grocery cart, much less walking up and down the aisles. I no longer played golf because of the agonizing pain of getting in and out of the golf cart. I couldn’t even walk down the driveway to get the mail. So no more daily work outs at the gym, and Zumba classes were out of the question. I was pretty much a prisoner in my home. Life was very difficult and depressing, especially for an extremely active person like myself.
Nine months later you wouldn’t know that I am the same sad, sedentary person. I want to thank you for giving me back my life. I’ve had no pain ever since the day of my surgery. I’ve returned to a fully active life with no restrictions what so ever. I can stand and iron, cook or bake for hours. My husband and I are able to again entertain friends in our home and enjoy their company. I am back to exercising, dancing, golfing, shopping, volunteer work, etc. At the time of my surgery you (Dr. Lestini) told me I would be back to my “normal’ self and that I would continue to improve for a year or so after my surgery. I didn’t really believe you, because I was suffering through the recovery of that extensive surgery. But you were so right! I can still clearly see how much improvement there is from one month to the next.
I must admit that I did not gain everything back without pain. I did push myself with physical therapy three times a week for months, and I was out walking every day. In the beginning there were a lot of tears and I could only walk to the end of the driveway. But a couple days later I could walk as far as the neighbor’s house, and I just kept improving until I was walking miles every day.
So, thank you again Dr. Lestini. You are my hero. You are a wonderful man to use the talent God has given you to repair people like me, who otherwise would be in pain and misery. You have given me back a full life.
