At the age of twenty-one my oldest son Andrew, a United States Marine and an Iraq combat veteran suffered an injury that left him with spinal damage - as well as a cadre of other problems.
One day, long after he had been injured I received a phone call from a very excited Andrew. His excitement was generated due to “Charity”, a one year old, beautiful Black Labrador service dog. Andrew had applied for and been chosen to work for the opportunity to keep her. They both go through vigorous ongoing training. Since day one they have been inseparable.
Andrew had been told to expect surgery. The prospect made me very apprehensive. I had heard all of the horror stories and urban legends regarding back surgeries. When Andrew asked my opinion about the surgery I told him of the prowess of the Triangle Spine and Back Care Center, Dr. Bill Lestini and Duke Raleigh Hospital. Since we live about five minutes from the Mayo Clinic and Andrew could have the surgery anywhere, that should speak volumes about my recommendation.
I can’t stress enough how superb the level of care was for my son in ways both physical and emotional.
Andrew was obviously and naturally very apprehensive about the surgery. To ease Andrew’s anxiety Dr. Lestini allowed Charity in the pre-op staging area and in his room after the surgery. The entire staff of Raleigh Duke Hospital was so warm and gentle it didn't take Charity long to totally accept “strangers” working on and around her human.
It was really amazing to me when people would pass by and greet Charity by name. Her fame obviously preceded her. Her abilities such as pushing the correct elevator button when told, helping to carry objects such as fast food bags smelling of cheese burgers and even delivering balloons to Andrew’s room must have been attention getting to say the least! And she does it with total and unconditional love. Oh, she does laundry and can help make a bed as well – really! By the time we were ready to leave the hospital there were a number of requests for “Charity Therapy” visits.
Carolina Canines for Service (non-profit organization) train dogs like Charity, then they place these incredible animals with those truly need their services. Their website is http://www.carolinacanines.org if anyone wishes to donate or seek services for a friend or loved one it is at least worth checking out. Sorry for the shameless plug, but they really do provide a great service!
In closing I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and respect to all of the fine professionals at Triangle Spine and Back Care Center and Duke Raleigh Hospital for helping my son start down the road to recovery. Andrew is healing nicely and it is all due to your combined efforts.
